At Hotel Indigo Durham, being part of the community isn’t something that sits only in our values statement; it’s something that guides the way we show up every day. From supporting local makers to collaborating with independent businesses across the city, we believe that hospitality is about caring for people both inside and outside our hotel.
This November, that ethos came to life as our team, guests, neighbours, and local partners came together to raise £1,035 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Working to provide invaluable support to those affected by cancer, Macmillan offers crucial care, advice and emotional support to those who need it most. Their presence in communities like Durham makes a genuine difference to cancer patients and their loved ones.
A show of Team Spirit, Creativity, and Connection
None of this would have been possible without the enthusiasm and dedication of our own Phil Clark, Coffee Shop Supervisor. Taking the lead on planning a series of fundraising events, Phil’s goal was simple: create moments of togetherness whilst also raising as much money as possible for these fantastic causes!
To help with the fundraising, Hotel Indigo Durham ran a tombola with wonderful prizes, a friendly football card competition and a limited-edition cocktail. Our cocktail was specially created for the fundraiser, with 50% of all sales going towards Macmillan Cancer Support.
Igniting Durham’s community spirit in such a meaningful way is something truly special, spreading joy through events whilst putting some good back into the world. Connections were made, and laughs were shared with the knowledge that we were all contributing to something bigger.

Coffee, Cakes, and Community Spirit
Our Macmillan Coffee Morning became a highlight of the fundraising efforts. Held in the hotel’s warm and welcoming coffee lounge, the event gathered familiar faces. From regular coffee shop guests who stop by on their way to work, to Durham University students, and even team members’ families.
We gathered and enjoyed spending time with the community over homemade treats and coffee in the Neighbourhood Coffee House. What felt most special about the morning was how naturally the room filled with connection.
Working with Local Organisations: Partnering with Man Up
To further give back, we hosted an event in collaboration with Man Up, a Durham-based organisation focused on men’s mental health and emotional support. Together, we organised a relaxed pool night at Kitt’s Pool Room & Bar, a much-loved spot in the city.
The partnership felt meaningful, raising funds for cancer support while also highlighting the importance of mental well-being. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and full of conversation. People came not only to play, but to connect, reflect, and spend time in a judgment-free environment.
It was a reminder that community care shows up in many forms. Sometimes in a donation, and sometimes in simply creating a place where people feel comfortable.

Why Supporting Macmillan Matters to Us
Cancer affects so many people, and many of us at the hotel have seen the impact first-hand, whether through colleagues, guests, family members or friends. Supporting Macmillan felt personal.
Phil shared that what meant the most to him was seeing the way people came together:
“The support from our guests, our team and our local partners was incredible. Everyone was so willing to take part, donate, and enjoy the events. It really showed how strong our community is here in Durham.”
That sense of community is something we are proud to nurture every day, not only through fundraising but also in how we welcome people into the hotel.
Our Place in the Durham Community
Located in the heart of the city, inside a beautifully restored Grade II-listed former council building, Hotel Indigo Durham is more than just a place to stay.
We’re part of the everyday rhythm of Durham, the students grabbing coffee as they walk through town, the guests exploring the Cathedral and Riverside, the locals enjoying dinner in our restaurant, and the visitors discovering the history woven into every corner of our neighbourhood.
Events like our Macmillan fundraising month reflect our commitment to being a hotel that contributes to the well-being of Durham’s community, not just as hosts, but as neighbours.
We are constantly looking for new ways to support our local community, from working with local businesses like Fika Coffee to the amazing work we do with local charities. Click here to learn more about what we’re doing to give back to the people of Durham. Thank You
We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to:
- Everyone who donated or took part in the activities
- Those who joined us for the Coffee Morning
- Local businesses that contributed prizes and support
- The Man Up team and Kitt’s Pool Room & Bar for partnering with us
- And of course, Phil, for leading the entire month with kindness, enthusiasm, and dedication
Your involvement helped us raise funds that will support individuals and families when they need it most. We are truly grateful.
