Castles & Fortresses
No trip to Durham would be complete without seeing Durham Castle, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and part of Durham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. But it’s far from the only historic fortress worth visiting during your stay.
Beyond the city centre, County Durham is home to medieval castles, Roman forts and grand estates that each tell a different part of the region’s story. From the impressive towers of Brancepeth Castle to the ancient remains of Binchester Roman Fort and the magnificent grounds of Raby Castle, Park and Gardens, there are plenty of opportunities to explore Durham’s history beyond the city walls.

Barnard Castle
Step back over 900 years at Barnard Castle, around 40 minutes from Hotel Indigo Durham in the heart of Teesdale. One of the North East’s most imposing medieval fortresses, it towers above the River Tees with a mighty 12th-century round tower, sweeping views across the gorge and royal links to Richard III, whose white boar emblem is still carved above a great chamber window.
