Filming Locations

Durham has starred in some of the best-loved films and television series, from the magical world of Harry Potter to the dramatic landscapes of The Witcher. Its historic castles, medieval architecture, rugged beaches and rolling countryside have set the scene for stories spanning centuries.

Many of these locations are open to visitors, and Hotel Indigo Durham is in the heart of the city. That makes it easy to explore the places behind the scenes, from Durham Cathedral’s famous cloisters to the Durham Dales and the Heritage Coast.

Durham City and Heritage

Explore Durham Cathedral, where the cloisters became Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Wander the historic streets around Durham Castle, a backdrop for Inspector George Gently, then step back in time at Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, a favourite with period drama productions.
